Areittas’ Dancing Flowers

Long ago, a beautiful girl was born on one of the Yasawa islands. A mystical elder crossed her path one day and exclaimed that she had the spirit of the Meke dance within, a heart beating to Fijian rhythm. Legend tells it that when Arietta, the dancing spirit, grew up, she was so enamoured by the beauty and soul of Fiji that she would dance a magnificent dance and cry tears of joy. When she did years later, the locals told that all Arietta’s tears gathered and formed a breathtaking, sparkling lake. Every evening as the sun went down, the flowers that surrounded this alluring lake were said to dance with the rhythm of the Meke. To this day, the locals still remember and honour Arietta as they chant and beat the lali drums during their awe-inspiring dance.
